Plant and animal life differs greatly from elsewhere in Africa due to the difference in height above sea level which starts at approximately 1500 metres
and extends above 3400 metres. Game such as Eland (the biggest antelope of all), Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest and Reedbuck, to name a few, can be seen. Approximately 300 species
of birds have been recorded in the Drakensberg, including the endangered Bearded Vulture. The Drakensberg was home to the hunter-gatherer Bushmen (San people) for thousands of years. Sadly, the Bushmen have all gone but fortunately they left galleries of their rock art on the sandstone rock faces of the Drakensberg. |
| The Drakensberg Park stretches from Bushmansnek in the South to Royal National Park in the North (approximately 180km) and offers a great variety of recreational and other opportunities. Trout fishing, bird watching, photography, horse trails, rock climbing, mountain biking, walks to Bushmaen paintings and other scenic places, swimming and relaxing. Adjacent to the park, visits to art and craft centres, cultural villages, historical battle sites, 4X4 trips and other activities can be undertaken. |
